Son Jun-ho: Defending More Than the Midfield

South Korean footballer Son Jun-ho denies accusations of match fixing by Chinese authorities, claiming he gave a false confession under duress.

As the football fans and the best online bookmakers eagerly anticipate the third round of the Asian Qualifiers 2026, unfortunately, the spotlight is not on the teams trying for a spot in the World Cup. China has overshadowed the tournament, not only for their under-par performances but also for a recent scandal of match-fixing and gambling. Regrettably, South Korean footballer Son Jun-ho, has found himself at the center of a major controversy.

Following an extensive investigation of the case, Chinese authorities handed him a lifetime ban, leading to the termination of his contract with Suwon FC, just three days later. In a dramatic turn of events, Son came forward in a press conference, denying the allegations and claiming that he was coerced into a false confession under duress.

It all began with a massive investigation by the Chinese Football Association (CFA) into match fixing and gambling. It lasted two years, and resulted in the lifetime banning of 38 players and 5 officials, including Son. Ostensibly, the case was a part of a broader crackdown on corruption within Chinese football.

Son, who had returned to South Korea after nearly ten months of detention, was among those accused of accepting bribes and participating in match fixing while playing for Shandong Taishan. Yet, despite these serious allegations, he maintains his innocence and accuses China for abuse and psychological torture.

Son Jun-ho comes forward and denies everything

On Wednesday, September 11, in a tearful press conference, the footballer denied all allegations of match fixing and bribery. He claimed that his confession was made under duress, stating that Chinese authorities used his family, especially his children, to exert psychological torture to force him to confess. As per his words:

“While showing me pictures of my daughter and son on my phone, they pressured me, saying: ‘What did the children do to deserve this? If your wife comes here too, how will the kids manage? Don’t you think your children want to see their father? So, admit it quickly.”

The player stated that, initially, he had agreed to remain silent about his detention experience as a condition for his release. However, he decided to speak out after being shocked by his inclusion in the sentence. He explained that prior to a trial, a judge offered him a quick release in exchange for his admission to receiving 200,000 yuan ($28,090) in cash, with the understanding that he would only be charged with bribery, not match fixing.

Admittedly, Son acknowledged that he once received the amount from his teammate, Jin Jingdao, a few days after a match that the police determined as fixed. However, he didn’t recall exactly why Jin had sent him the money and insisted that the transaction had nothing to do with any wrong doing.

The Chinese FA did not respond to the Claims

There has been no public reaction by the Chinese Football Association to the claims. The General Administration of Sport of China has also remained silent on the matter. However, when asked on Thursday, September 12, about Son’s assertions, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China is “a country that upholds the rule of law. The judicial authorities in China handle cases in strict accordance with the law and fully protect the lawful rights and interests of the person concerned. Son Jun-ho admitted his wrongdoing, accepted the punishment, expressed remorse in court, and said he would not appeal.”

This silence related to the claims has not gone unnoticed. Lim Soo-suk, a spokesperson for South Korea’s foreign ministry, stated that the government is providing Son with necessary consular assistance. Additionally, football commentator Park Moon-sung discussed Son’s situation in a video, highlighting the tense nature of his return to Korea.

Son Jun-ho’s Career on the Line

While the names of the players and the officials involved in the scandal may not be known to the general public, that of the Corean is. A player with significant achievements and contributions to both his national team and the clubs he has played for. Beginning with the Pohand Steelers of K League 1 where he earned the contract to Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. Further recognitions came when he joined Shandong Taishan in the Chinese Super League, where he continued to excel. Son’s versatility as a midfielder and his ability to control the game’s tempo have made him a valuable asset to any team he plays for.

4 times winner of the domestic league, South Korean K League 1 MVP in 2020, 20 international caps, are some of the achievements in Son’s portfolio. A testament to his greatest asset which is his ability to adapt to different leagues and maintain high-performance standards underscores his status as a football star rather than just an average player.

A career that he definitely hopes to continue. After all, on June 14, he had joined the K League 1 club Suwon FC with the help of Choi Soon-ho, the club’s director and manager at Pohang. Unfortunately, two days after Son’s statement, the club terminated the contract, apparently by mutual agreement. However, he is determined to clear his name and has expressed his intention to fight the ban and restore his reputation.

What steps can he take from now on

If the lifetime ban imposed by the Chinese authorities persists, he would be barred from participating in any official football matches. Additionally, the stigma associated with match-fixing allegations could tarnish his legacy and affect his future opportunities within the sport, such as coaching or mentoring roles. The Chinese Football Association has informed FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation of its decision to ban the player for life. Should FIFA decide to apply this ban worldwide, it would set the end of his career in stone.

The first action that Son Jun-ho took was to demand from the Chinese the video of his so-called confession. According to the regulations he has 10 calendar days to appeal the decision to FIFA’s arbitrary committee. Since, the official announcement was made on Sep 12, the deadline expired on Sep 22. We do not know if he filed the paperwork for the appeal. In any case, FIFA’s decision on the issue is mandatory in order to proceed to the next step, if the ruling body decides against the player.

The next step, is to present the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the highest authority in sports-related disputes. Naturally, it can overturn decisions made by FIFA and national federations. In addition to the rest of the claims, he can also add that he was not allowed to have the legal representation of his choice. Instead, he was given an appointed counsilor who did not adequately defend him.

The Road Ahead for Son Jun-ho

If all else fails, the South Korean international can take his case to the Court of Human Rights and base the claim on the violation of his human rights. While, a decision in his favor will clear his name and get him a sizable amount of money as compensation for his troubles, it may not reverse the decisions from the ruling bodies as far as his career is concerned.

While revealing the scandal, punishing the perpetrators and taking steps so that it will not be repeated in the future is a good thing for the fans and the punters who would like to open an account at the best betting platform, such abuse of power (if the accusations are true) does not help at all. The investigatory results into such cases must be completely transparent and leaving absolutely no room for a doubt to their resolutions.
