Navigating the Waters of Olympic Swimming Amidst Doping

From one generation to the next, swimmers have had to face competitors suspected, and often later confirmed, to be doping.
Navigating the Waters of Olympic Swimming Amidst Doping

Every four years, the Olympic Games bring the world together in a celebration of local athletic talent, showcasing the ultimate in sportsmanship. Olympic betting introduces an exciting layer to this event, allowing fans to support their favorite athletes and possibly reap financial rewards. While the best online bookmakers set odds based on a range of factors, an athlete’s physical condition remains a key element. Yet, the true spirit of the sport faces challenges when certain practices provide unfair advantages or violate the principles of fair play. Regrettably, such incidents are not uncommon. As swimmers compete for a spot in the 2024 Paris Games, they encounter a familiar obstacle in their path: yet another doping scandal mars the Olympic narrative.

Doping Scandals: A Dark Undercurrent in Olympic Swimming History

Swimmers worldwide have consistently faced rivals from countries suspected, and often confirmed, of using performance-enhancing drugs, generation after generation. Reflecting on the 1970s and 1980s, it’s impossible not to recall East Germany. The country’s legacy of doping has left an indelible mark on the Olympic record books and affected the lives and careers of many swimmers who were unjustly denied their rightful medals.

In the 1990s, China became infamously involved in doping, followed by Russia in the 2010s. Meanwhile, Ireland’s Michelle Smith , after winning three gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta Games, received a four-year ban from the sport and never returned to competitive swimming, yet she retains her medals to this day.

Doping Allegations Resurface

China is once again at the forefront of doping allegations. Reports from The New York Times and German broadcaster ARD in April revealed that 23 top Chinese swimmers tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ) — the same substance found in Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva’s system — yet they were permitted to continue competing, even securing medals at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Fast forward to the present, on June 14, the Times disclosed that three of these swimmers had previously tested positive for another drug in 2016 and 2017. Despite this, their results were concealed, and they faced no suspensions. These athletes are not just any competitors; two of them clinched gold at the Tokyo Games, and the third set a world record. They are all expected to be strong contenders for medals at the upcoming Paris Games in July.c

In both cases, Chinese authorities asserted that the athletes had accidentally consumed the banned substances. This defense has been met with skepticism by some anti-doping experts. These two episodes contribute to the persistent doubts among competitors regarding a pattern of doping in China and question the effectiveness of the World Anti-Doping Agency in addressing these concerns.

Championing Fair Play

Lilly King, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, expressed her frustration: “It’s extremely frustrating I think for the athletes just to always have in the back of our mind that maybe this sport’s not fair. We put everything on the line, our privacy, really everything that we do to compete with a level playing field. It’s extremely frustrating to not have faith that others are doing the same thing”.

Reflecting on the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, gold medalists Nancy Hogshead and Rowdy Gaines recall the anguish caused by East German athletes doping with testosterone and other anabolic steroids. “It was the world’s worst-kept secret”, they said. The landscape has changed since then; but plenty of questions around the integrity of swimming remain. “There are cheaters all around the world, no doubt in my mind”, Gaines said. However, he added a hopeful note. “I do believe that the vast majority of athletes around the world are clean”.
