The 2026 FIFA World Cup marks a historic expansion of the tournament from 32 to 48 participating nations, spreading across three co-host countries — the United States, Canada, and Mexico. For the first time, the group stage features 12 groups of four teams instead of eight, meaning three times the matchups and a greater number of nations than ever before get a shot at glory.
The group stage runs from June 11 to June 27, 2026, with every team playing three games. Points are awarded the standard way: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss. Tiebreakers are resolved by goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results, team conduct score, and finally FIFA world ranking.
The Final Draw took place on December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. — hosted by Kevin Hart, Heidi Klum, and Danny Ramirez, with the draw itself conducted by Rio Ferdinand and Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky, Aaron Judge, and Shaquille O’Neal as draw assistants.
All 48 qualified teams were divided into four pots of twelve, based on FIFA World Rankings. One team from each pot was placed into each group. The three host nations — Mexico (A1), Canada (B1), and the USA (D1) — were seeded directly into Pot 1. The remaining nine Pot 1 spots went to the next top-ranked qualified teams.
A key rule: no two teams from the same confederation could share a group, with the sole exception of UEFA (Europe), where up to two teams per group were allowed. FIFA also split the top two seeds — Spain (ranked 1st) and Argentina (2nd), and France (3rd) and England (4th) — into opposite halves of the knockout bracket, ensuring they cannot meet before the semifinals.
Six spots were still unconfirmed at the time of the draw, with placeholders for UEFA playoff winners and intercontinental playoff winners. All six were confirmed in March 2026.
Mexico kick off the entire tournament against South Africa at Estadio Azteca on June 11. South Korea bring technical quality led by their European-based stars. Czechia arrived as last-minute drama artists — they conceded an equalizer against Denmark and then won the penalty shootout 3-1. South Africa are returning to the World Cup after a long absence and will be targeting an upset.
Mexico and South Korea have met at two World Cups — Mexico won 3-1 in 1983 and 1-0 in 2010. South Africa hosted the 2010 World Cup and became the only host nation never to advance from the group stage. Czechia — formerly Czechoslovakia — reached the World Cup final in 1934 and 1962 under their old name.
Canada host their first-ever World Cup matches and open at BMO Field in Toronto. Switzerland are calm, methodical, and virtually unbeatable at group stages — they’ve escaped the group at every World Cup since 2006. Bosnia eliminated Italy in one of the most dramatic nights in qualifying history; they arrive on a confidence high. Qatar won the 2023 Asian Cup and are more dangerous than their ranking suggests.
Bosnia are appearing at only their second-ever World Cup. Italy’s absence — missing for the third consecutive time — is the biggest story around this group. Switzerland have never been eliminated at the group stage at any tournament since 2004. Canada’s best World Cup result was a group-stage exit in 1986.
Germany are four-time world champions and drew what most consider the most manageable group of any top seed. Curaçao make their historic World Cup debut — they are the smallest nation by population ever to qualify. Ecuador qualified for their fourth World Cup and bring athletic pressing football. Ivory Coast, with a generation of top-level European league talent, are a genuine threat to spoil the party.
Germany were eliminated in the group stage at both 2018 and 2022 — unexpected exits that haunt them going into this tournament. Curaçao’s population is around 150,000, making them the smallest nation ever at a men’s World Cup. Ecuador have never advanced past the Round of 16. Ivory Coast won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2023 and 2024 in back-to-back triumphs.
Belgium are in a post-golden-generation phase but still carry significant Bundesliga and Premier League talent. Egypt — fuelled by Mohamed Salah — are the most dangerous side here on their day and could cause a major upset. Iran arrive with collective defensive discipline and a compact, physically resilient block. New Zealand qualified from Oceania and will fight hard for every result.
Belgium’s golden generation peaked with a third-place finish in 2018 but haven’t replicated that since. Mohamed Salah has never won a World Cup match — Egypt’s only previous appearance saw them go out in the group stage in 1990. Iran and the USA famously met in a politically charged match in 1998, won by Iran 2-1. New Zealand’s best World Cup result was the 2010 group stage, where they drew all three matches.
Spain are the top-ranked team in the world and Euro 2024 champions — the favorites to top the group by a distance. Uruguay are the most dangerous second-seed here, with a proud tradition and a well-organized defensive structure. Saudi Arabia shocked Argentina 2-1 in 2022 in the biggest World Cup upset of the decade. Cape Verde are making their historic first-ever World Cup appearance.
Spain have won the World Cup once (2010) but have dominated European football with back-to-back Euro titles in 2024 and 2020. Uruguay won the first-ever World Cup in 1930 and remain the only two-time champions before the 1950s era. Spain and Uruguay have met at two World Cups — Spain won both (2010 and 1950). Cape Verde’s qualification is one of the great stories of African football.
Kylian Mbappé vs Erling Haaland — this is the most star-studded group stage matchup in the tournament. France are defending champions and come in as one of the overall favorites. Senegal are Africa Cup of Nations holders and one of the continent’s most dangerous sides. Norway, built around Haaland, are making their first World Cup since 1998. Iraq qualify for the first time in 40 years — under remarkable logistical adversity — and represent a wonderful story.
France and Senegal memorably met in 2002, when Senegal beat France 1-0 in one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. Erling Haaland has never played at a major international tournament before — this is his first. Iraq’s last World Cup appearance was 1986 in Mexico, where they lost all three games. FIFA arranged a charter flight to bring Iraq to the intercontinental playoff after their airspace was closed due to regional conflict.
Lionel Messi leads the reigning World Cup champions into what is one of the more comfortable draws for a top seed. Algeria are Africa Cup of Nations winners and highly motivated to make a statement. Austria are a well-organized Bundesliga-driven side with their best squad in decades. Jordan are making their World Cup debut and will relish the experience on the biggest stage.
Argentina won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — Messi’s crowning moment — and come in as the second-ranked team in the world. Algeria beat Germany 2-1 in the 1982 World Cup in one of football’s biggest-ever upsets. Argentina and Algeria have never met at a World Cup. Jordan’s route to this tournament is historic — they became the first Jordanian side to reach a World Cup via the intercontinental playoff path.
Portugal are led by a post-Ronaldo generation but still boast Champions League-calibre talent in Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leão, and Rúben Neves. Colombia are a dangerous second-seed side with James Rodríguez potentially making one last major tournament appearance. DR Congo qualify under their current name for the first time — previously Zaire in 1974 — and bring the passionate backing of the continent. Uzbekistan make their stunning World Cup debut.
Portugal have won the Euros (2016) and Nations League but never the World Cup — their best finish remains third place in 1966 under Eusébio. Colombia’s most famous World Cup moment was the 2014 quarterfinal with James Rodríguez’s stunning volley that won Goal of the Tournament. DR Congo (as Zaire) famously conceded a 9-0 loss to Yugoslavia in 1974. Colombia and Portugal have never met at a World Cup.
Eight years of pain meet eight years of purpose. England vs Croatia carries the weight of the 2018 World Cup semifinal, when Croatia knocked England out in extra time. England arrive under Thomas Tuchel with a talented squad and a point to prove. Croatia are always dangerous at tournaments — they were 2018 runners-up. Ghana bring unpredictable flair. Panama are appearing at their second-ever World Cup.
England and Croatia have met four times since 2018 in major tournaments — including a famous England win at Euro 2020. Croatia reached the World Cup final in 2018 and the semifinal in 2022. England’s only World Cup title remains 1966. Ghana famously knocked the USA out on penalties in 2010 in one of the tournament’s most dramatic endings. England vs Croatia is the most anticipated group fixture in Group L and one of the top matches of the entire group stage.
