Fixtures & results
Starting with this edition, the FIFA World Cup expanded to 48 teams — an increase of 16 compared to the previous seven tournaments. This is the first expansion and format change since 1998. More nations means more rivalries, more surprises, and more moments that define careers. The game has grown, and so has everything around it.
The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four. Each team plays three group games. The top two teams from each group advance, along with the eight best third-place finishers — creating a brand-new Round of 32. The total number of matches increases from 64 to 104, and the tournament lasts 39 days.
The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Mexico gets the honour of hosting the opening match on June 11 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — a replay of the 2010 opener against South Africa.

Group winners, runners-up and the best four third-placed teams will advance to the Knockout stage, round of 32.
Knockout Stage
So what does it mean for you, the bettor? The Round of 32 is a brand-new betting stage — it has never existed at a World Cup before. That means bookmaker models are less refined for it, which historically creates pricing inefficiencies that sharp bettors can exploit. With eight third-placed teams qualifying, group stage dynamics shift too: heavy favourites may rest key players in the final group game, opening up value on the result. More matches also means more live betting windows across more days of the tournament. If you’re betting in-play, the 2026 format is the most target-rich environment the World Cup has ever offered.
What to expect from this tournament
Argentina arrive as defending champions, with Lionel Messi set for what is widely expected to be his last World Cup appearance. Spain enters as the highest-ranked team, with Argentina second — the two sides separated by the draw so they can only meet in the final. France, England, Brazil, and Germany all carry genuine title ambitions. The top of the market will be fiercely competitive from day one.
Early predictions point to a final between Spain and either Argentina or France. But with 104 matches across 39 days and a new knockout format, expect storylines that nobody saw coming. Debut nations like Curaçao, Cabo Verde, and Jordan will look to announce themselves on the biggest stage. And with first-time co-hosts sharing duties across three distinct football cultures, the atmosphere alone will be unlike anything the tournament has ever produced.

The United States will host 78 matches, including from the quarterfinal stage onward. Canada and Mexico will each host 13. It’s the first time three nations have ever co-hosted the men’s World Cup.
All host countries got their seeding position in the group stage automatically.
